Susan participated in the ACM Programming Contests as a member of the "Lamar Loops". Susan was also one of the first Cooperative Education students from the Computer Science Department. She did her Co-op semester with Dow Chemical in Tulsa and Houston. Susan helped build the standards of pay, performance, and participation for the program. Susan successfully completed the degree program, with honors and nearly two years of ‘real’ work experience.
After graduating, Susan moved to San Antonio to be near her family. She accepted her first job at Southwestern Bell as a Manager of Real-Time Systems. After one year of having a job that required her to be on call twenty-four seven and carry around one of those "new fangled pagers" she moved on to Datapoint Corporation. Susan was the only female and person of color in the Datapoint’s Research and Development Department. She worked on one the first Laser Printer projects in the world, which was commissioned to develop a "printing mail station" for the US Government. Susan also worked on the Minx project which was the pre-cursor to the State Department’s secure teleconferencing system. After five years, Susan moved on the Martin-Marietta Corporation in Littleton, Colorado. There she worked on the telecommunications processes for Small Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles. In addition, she became a Subject Matter Expert on Weapon Control Systems, performance modeling and simulation, and feasibility analysis for the Joint Tactical Fusion Chiefs of Staff working out of the Jet Propulsion Laboratories at California Tech in Pasadena, California. After nearly twelve years, and non-stop travel between Colorado and California and other unnamed points on the globe, Susan moved on to being an Expert Contractor in Cryptology. Her skill sets landed her an Associate Partnership with Booz Allen & Hamilton’s Federal Contracting Division. There, Susan moved into Space and Warfare "secure" systems concepts of operations, design, development and deployment for the Navy’s Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet. Susan was responsible for a unit of 140 employees and over $400 million in projects. This work was based out McLean, Virginia, a suburb of Washington D.C. She came back to San Antonio and began working for the familyrsquo;s firm, The Mayfield Group. Susan led the team that provided "technology infusion" for the City of San Antonio. The contract was to provide the Code Enforcement Department with complete mobile offices. Eighty vehicles were purchased and outfitted as mobile offices with all the bells and whistles, available at the time, including CDPD modems, the pre-cursor to aircards. When that project was completed Susan joined Hansen Information Technologies as a Project Director.
In past years, Susan helped organize the Lamar University San Antonio Alumni Chapter. In recent years, Susan was a member of the committee, along with Clint Harwood, Keith Mott, and Tim Magnuson that created the "Dr. William C.
