2007 Fall Open House-Coordinator Crystal
Saturday, November 17, 2007 Open House Check List
This week the INSPIRE team attended the Lamar University Open House. Open House is held multiple times every year for high school students interested in possibly attending Lamar University, and their parents.
This session of Open House began at 10am with some presentations from the Theatre department. After the presentations, multiple people from the University spoke to the prospective students and their parents. The students were then split up according to their desired degree.
We spoke with students in the Computer Science field. We talked about our experiences with Computer Science, and why we chose the field. We also spoke about what we do at INSPIRE. The group talked about the benefits of INSPIRE and what it is like to work in the team. We then demonstrated a few short programs on the Lego NXT. We also discussed the Lamar student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery.
After our demonstration of the robots, we were asked incorporate some other students from other majors in our campus tour. We only had a short time before lunch, but we tried to show the students as much of the campus as possible, while hitting the key points. The first thing we showed the students was the new Sheila Umphrey Recreational Center. The center had its own tourists to show us the facility. Next, we brought the students to the Setzer Center and showed them the Nest, the Setzer Store, and Maribou’s. We then brought them to the Galloway Business Building, and showed them the Landes Auditorium. Next, we took them across campus to the Cardinal Village Dorms. Along the way, we pointed out the key buildings including the majestic Library and our own building, the Maes. Cardinal Village showed the students an empty dorm room from the first building. After Cardinal Village, it was lunch time, and we took the students to the Dining Hall. After Lunch, we escorted the students interested in the Honors Program to the Library, where the Honors Society was giving a presentation on the 8th Floor.
During Open House, we gained experience in presenting information, as well as leading a tour group in front of a large audience. Open House was very interesting and I am confident that we inspired students to participate in the Computer Science program.
For the next Open House, I would strongly suggest have a presentation for the entire group of students about Computer Science and INSPIRE. Also, we need to have picture waivers available for students and parents to sign so we can take pictures that can be used on the website. Finally, we should bring a sign up sheet to put student contact information on, as well a check list of students interested in being on our mailing list.
Here are some pictures from Open House.
