2008 Fall Open House-Coordinator Valerie

Preparation

On November 15 we attended Fall Open House. I’ve been to two Open Houses before, but this time we set up a more formal presentation after the initial Open House because we had a group of students come in from Giddings, TX.

For the initial Open House presentation, Dr. Liu and I were supposed to talk to prospective students in SBS room 109, but the building was locked, so we went to the INSPIRED lab, where we met Crystal and Rafael. We had 3 prospective students and 2 parents attend, and I think it was good that we went to the lab, because we got to demo some robots and Mr. Foreman got to speak to them. I also was able to take them to see a dorm.

After that presentation, we went to lunch and met up with the students and chaperones from Giddings. Iris and Mr. Foreman joined Dr. Liu, Crystal, Rafael and I for lunch with the Giddings students. After lunch, Mr. Carl broke the students into two groups because some students wanted to see the library, and other students wanted to see the sports center and the dorm. Rafael went with the students who wanted to go to the library, and I took the other group to the sports center and the dorm. They really liked both facilities. After the mini tour, we went back to the lab to have the more formal presentation.

I think the presentation went really well. The students got to hear about Computer Science and INSPIRED from many different points of view, and I think that really helped them. I think the fact that Iris mentioned she started Computer Science without any prior knowledge really showed them that it's possible to succeed in Computer Science, no matter what your background. The students also got to see some video from our summer camps, which showed them that Computer Science can be fun too. All in all, I think the even went over really well, and I hope they'll consider Lamar and Computer Science as a part of their future.
